Week 7: Midweek Roundup

I apologize for the lack of posting the last couple weeks. Life and football watching has gotten in the way. Anyhow, lots of news to report from the craziness that was week 6:

HOU - Optimistic on WR Andre Johnson
Source: The Associated Press
Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is hopeful that WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) will return to game action in Week 7.

Johnson is among the best two or three WRs in the game, so if he is active, he is in your lineup. Keep a close eye on this one this week. And to be fair, I don't trust anything Gary Kubiak says. It would be exactly like him to hype up Johnson all week long to force Tennessee to prepare for him and then he never sees the field Sunday. Stay tuned.

SD - TE Antonio Gates could return
Source: SportingNews.com - Kevin Acee
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) seems to be on track to return to game action against the New York Jets in Week 7. It would be his first game action since leaving early Sept. 17 against the New England Patriots.

Gates isn't promising anything, but he did return to practice. He is a good enough player that he can be used in his first week back despite the uncertainty about how his foot will respond unless you have a strong top 10 option at TE.

HOU - QB Matt Schaub may sit Wednesday
Source: Twitter
Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said QB Matt Schaub (chest) has a chest bruise and may sit out practice Wednesday, Oct. 19. Kubiak said the team may give Schaub a day or two of practice off per week moving forward.

Schaub has been beat up for the last three weeks by the Steelers, Raiders, and Ravens, and the Titans are unlikely to let up.

STL - QB Sam Bradford has high ankle sprain
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Jim Thomas
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (ankle) has a high-ankle sprain and is considered questionable for Week 7.

Bradford is walking around in a boot right now and his playing status for this week is very much in doubt. A.J. Feeley is the Rams #2 QB and would get the start if Bradford can't go this week against the Cowboys.

DAL - RB Felix Jones out at least two games
Source: The Dallas Morning News - David Moore
Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (ankle) will miss at least the next two games due to the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 6 against the New England Patriots, meaning he is out until at least November. He might miss as many as four weeks.

Tough news for the Cowboys that showed in New England how they desperately need a rushing game.

DET - RB Jahvid Best's status uncertain
Source: The Associated Press
Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best's (concussion) status for Week 7 is uncertain after he experienced 'concussion-like symptoms' following the team's Week 6 game against the San Francisco 49ers. He will have to pass the league's concussion protocol before being cleared to practice.

Best came with concussion concerns out of college at Cal because of a scary concussion he suffered that was the second of his junior and last season there. Maurice Morris is the player to add if you own Best or if you are looking for temporary help at RB.

WAS - RB Tim Hightower will remain emergency RB until healthy
Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday, Oct. 16, that RB Tim Hightower (shoulder) will continue to be rested until he proves his shoulder is 100 percent. 'As I told Tim before the game, if I had to have him, if somebody went down, he was going to play, but that was the only situation he would play,' Shanahan said. 'I thought was a little banged up. Still want to get him healthy, want him to be able to play at 100 percent.'

Hightower is the third best RB on the team, but Shanahan is doing a good job of hiding that publicly.

BUF - RB C.J. Spiller to remain as wide receiver
Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller will remain at a new position, wide receiver, for the short term. 'He did a very good job,' head coach Chan Gailey said Monday, Oct. 17. 'I can see that being his role for the short term.' Spiller had five receptions for 39 yards in Week 6 against the New York Giants.

Spiller is being used very similarly to Darren Sproles and looking pretty good doing it. He is worth an add in PPR leagues. The Bills are smart to find a way to get him on the field with all the injuries to their WR corps.

NYG - RB Brandon Jacobs' workload will increase
Source: The Associated Press - Tom Canavan
New York Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram said RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) will carry a bigger part of the load with RB Ahmad Bradshaw when he is completely healthy. Jacobs' workload was limited in the first four games because the team had too many short series and they fell behind early.

Bradshaw's owners saw the same thing happen last year, and this factor is what limits his upside to RB2 level numbers when Jacobs is playing.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant moving back to punt duties
Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.
Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will likely go back to sharing punt return duties with WR Kevin Ogletree and CB Terence Newman after the team released WR Dwayne Harris.

Bryant is open to taking big hits on returns, but it also enhances his value in leagues that count return TDs. You don't like seeing this if you're a Bryant owner in a league that doesn't count return TDs.

TB - RB LeGarrette Blount likely to miss another game
Source: SportingNews.com - Roy Cummings
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is likely to miss the team's Week 7 game in London against the Chicago Bears. RB Earnest Graham is expected to continue to receive the majority of touches in Blount's absence. The team has a bye week in Week 8.

The buzz continues to be that Blount has a knee injury that could keep him out several weeks. With the bye in Week 8, it makes a lot of sense to sit him this week.

NYG - RB Ahmad Bradshaw scores three TDs
Source: The Associated Press
New York Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.

Bradshaw was the picture of determination all day. He should be treated as an RB1 if Brandon Jacobs can't go in week 8 coming out of the bye.

WAS - RB Ryan Torain stumbles when given chance
Source: KFFL.com
Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain posted just 22 rushing yards on 10 carries in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Luckily, RB Roy Helu Jr. did little also, running for just six yards on two carries. Next week, the Redskins face the leaky Carolina Panthers rush defense, but it remains to be seen whether Helu Jr., Torain or RB Tim Hightower (shoulder) will get the nod.

Torain was set up for huge success against of the worst run defenses in the league today, but the Redskins fell behind early and never got the ground game on track. He is worth holding, if not starting, to see the results next week against a Panthers defense that made Michael Turner look like a young back today.

BAL - RB Ray Rice posts 161 yards from scrimmage
Source: KFFL.com
Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice carried 23 times for 101 yards in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. He also added 60 yards on five receptions. It was Rice's first 100-yard game since Week 1, when he had a season-high 107 rushing yards.

Rice has been putting up high end RB1 numbers even when he doesn't score. He has rewarded everyone who took him over Arian Foster or Adrian Peterson.

BAL - WR Anquan Boldin posts season-high 132 yards
Source: KFFL.com
Baltimore Ravens WR Anquan Boldin had eight receptions for a season-high 132 yards in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. It was Boldin's first 100-yard game since Dec. 5, 2010, and his most yards since he had 142 yards and three scores in Week 3 last season.

Boldin had a chance for a bigger day with one target caught inside the five, but he couldn't make much happen after the catch. Torrey Smith's speed outside is helping open things up in the middle of the field for Boldin.

BAL - PK Billy Cundiff has huge stat line
Source: KFFL.com
Baltimore Ravens PK Billy A. Cundiff had five field goals (43, 48, 25, 33, 40) and two extra points in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. Cundiff has at least 10 points in each of his past three games.

Cundiff continues to be one of the most valuable fantasy kickers, playing for a good team that doesn't always finish in the red zone.

HOU - WR Derrick Mason posts three catches in team debut
Source: KFFL.com
Houston Texans WR Derrick Mason had three receptions for 27 yards in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens in his team debut.

Mason was a healthy warm body who could handle the basics in the offense, but he is nothing more. He also got the treat of losing to his old team for the second time in three weeks.

HOU - WR Jacoby Jones fills in admirably
Source: KFFL.com
Houston Texans WR Jacoby Jones, serving as the team's No. 1 wideout with WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) inactive, posted four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Jones performance last week was more due to the Raiders defense, and he bounced back with a solid game this week. He remains a WR3/flex play in PPR leagues until Andre Johnson returns if you are strapped because of injuries of bye weeks.

HOU - RB Arian Foster bottled up in Week 6
Source: KFFL.com
Houston Texans RB Arian Foster carried 15 times for 49 yards in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens. He was able to salvage the stat line with 52 yards on six receptions.

Foster was able to salvage a solid fantasy day for the second straight week on his receiving skills. He is still a fantasy RB1, but the large workload for Ben Tate was a bit troubling.

WAS - Won't announce starting QB until Wednesday
Source: The Washington Times - Rich Campbell
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday, Oct. 16, that he won't announce a starting quarterback until Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the earliest. 'We needed a spark,' Shanahan said. QB John Beck replaced an ineffective QB Rex Grossman in the fourth quarter in Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

I'll spare you the suspense. It's John Beck.

DET - WR Calvin Johnson surpasses 100-yard mark
Source: The Associated Press
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson caught seven passes for 113 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Johnson didn't catch a TD for the first time this year, but don't drop him (DUH). He can't be held down completely, even when bracketed for most of the game.

DET - Matt Stafford throws two TDs
Source: The Associated Press
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford went 28-for-50 for 293 yards and two touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Stafford wasn't great on the last gasp drive and didn't always look comfortable in the pocket, but he did put up another QB1 day for fantasy leagues. He should be able to take advantage of a poor Falcons secondary next week.

PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger solid Week 6
Source: The Associated Press
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger went 12-for-23 for 200 yards and one touchdown in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Roethlisberger wasn't asked to do much because the Steelers led from start to finish. He has an outstanding matchup against the Cardinals next week, so don't give up on him because of this meager stat line.

JAX - Blaine Gabbert effective Week 6
Source: The Associated Press
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert went 12-for-26 for 109 yards and one touchdown in Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gabbert found Hill wide open in the end zone for the second straight week, and he also started well, but in between, he was largely ineffective.

BUF - RB Fred Jackson produces in run, pass game
Source: The Associated Press
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries against the New York Giants in Week 6. He also caught five passes for 47 yards in the game.

Jackson is the #1 RB in fantasy football and there's no reason to think that he will slow down.

NYG - QB Eli Manning effective Week 6
Source: The Associated Press
New York Giants QB Eli Manning went 21-for-32 for 292 yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.

Manning was able to make noise with Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, and his tight end Jake Ballard. He is still a low-end QB1 at best prone to bouts of bad play, but he could have had a much bigger day today with a few breaks in the red zone.

IND - QB Curtis Painter solid in Week 6
Source: The Associated Press
Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter went 23-for-34 for 188 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6.

Painter mostly had to settle for short passes and never got comfortable today. The Bengals defense is underrated and continues to be a tough matchup although they haven't faced any of the league's elite QBs yet.

CIN - Andy Dalton effective Week 6
Source: The Associated Press
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton went 25-for-32 for 264 yards and one touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6.

Dalton took advantage of poor play in the inexperienced Colts secondary and big Bengals wide receivers. This is still about his fantasy ceiling, but he is looking less and less like a rookie every week.
