Week 8: Midweek Roundup

What a boring week 7. The match ups were painful and it was probably the most low scoring fantasy week for most of you guys. At least the Saints made up for the scoring deficits on MNF though.  I'm sure the Colts are happy they don't have any Prime time games until December (vs. Patriots 12/4) With that, we'll get to it...

OAK - No structural damage for RB Darren McFadden
Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran
Tests on Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden's (foot) right foot showed no structural damage, according to head coach Hue Jackson. McFadden will be rested during the team's bye week in hopes that he can play in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos.

Great news for McFadden. He has a history of being unable to stay on the field though so watch this one closely. The bye week falls with great timing here.

SD - RB Mike Tolbert walking fine in locker room
Source: NBC San Diego - Michael Gehlken
San Diego Chargers RB Mike Tolbert (hamstring) was walking fine in the locker room Monday, Oct. 24, and said his left hamstring is only a 'little sore.' Apparently Tolbert was removed as a 'precaution.'

The workload split between Ryan Mathews and Tolbert continues to be a bit of mystery as Tolbert seems like the favorite to get goal-line touches and therefore remains a flex option and an annoyance for Mathews owners.

DET - QB Matthew Stafford unsure of status
Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle), who is being listed as day-to-day, is slightly less optimistic than the team that he will play in Week 8 versus the Denver Broncos. 'I think every competitor plans on playing,' Stafford said. 'We'll see if that comes true. I've got to keep getting better to get there, but I want to, obviously.' He said the ankle sprain is 'kind of in a weird spot,' and he's unsure if he'll practice Wednesday, Oct. 26. QB Shaun Hill will get the start if Stafford isn't ready.

We'll obviously watch this one closely this week. One thing to remember is that you can discount anything that coach Jim Schwartz says on this. He'll give Denver zero information as to who they'll face under center.

SD - RB Ryan Mathews expected to play
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (thumb) had his left thumb wrapped Monday, Oct. 24, but he is expected to suit up against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8.

Mathews is still basically an RB1 in PPR leagues, even with Mike Tolbert keeping his part of the RBBC through his own various injuries.

SD - TE Antonio Gates likely to miss practice time
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Kevin Acee
San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot), who caught five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown against the New York Jets in Week 7, is still sore and will likely miss some practice time in the weeks to come. However, the team expects him to continue to play in games.

Gates proved once again vs. the Jets that as long as he is active, he has to be in your lineup. Don't sweat the practice participation and trust Gates and the Chargers to manage his wear and tear so that he can last for the entire year.

ARI - Beanie Wells' injury a mystery
Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers
Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) knows he won't need to undergo surgery on his right knee injury, but the team still does not know exactly what part of his knee is injured. Wells' knee kept 'locking up' during the team's Week 7 game. It is unclear if the injury is related to an allergic reaction that he had to an injection. 'Some of the locking symptoms people talk about could mean something inside the knee is loose or misplaced: a meniscus tear or a loose piece of cartilage or bone, or an injury to the joint cartilage, if it's a big enough piece. That's some of the most common things if there is 'true' locking,' Dr. Orr Limpisvasti said.

Not a good vibe here with the team unable to pinpoint the trouble. He was injury prone at Ohio State, some things never change.  Stay tuned on this one.

OAK - PK Sebastian Janikowski practicing
Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran
Oakland Raiders PK Sebastian Janikowski (hamstring) did limited drills Tuesday, Oct. 25, but his availability after the Week 8 bye week isn't in question after the team released PK Dave Rayner.

Looks like it's back to business for Janikowski.
TB - Hopeful of RB LeGarrette Blount's return
Source: The Tampa Tribune - Joe Henderson
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping that RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) will be able to return to the starting lineup following their Week 8 bye. If Blount can't go in Week 9, RB Kregg Lumpkin will get the start, unless the team signs someone from the practice squad.

Fantasy owners need to know the name Chad Spann. He's a tough RB with a low center of gravity and strong leg drive. Spann is on the Bucs practice squad, but may get activated now that Earnest Graham is out for the year.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson will not be benched
Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said Monday, Oct. 24, that he will not bench RB Chris Johnson despite the team's struggles in the running game. Munchak does not plan on making any changes to the lineup right now.

Johnson continues to struggle and his backup Javon Ringer is doing more with his touches. Ringer will likely still get time as the complementary back behind Johnson.

STL - QB Sam Bradford to be re-evaluated Wednesday
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Kathleen Nelson
Updating a previous report, St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford (ankle) is expected to be re-evaluated Wednesday, Oct. 26. It sounds like he is not expected to practice that day.

Bradford is likely to be limited (or miss) in practice all week. His playing status for week 8 is very much in doubt.

HOU - WR Andre Johnson likely to practice this week
Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) is expected to practice this week, and he might be ready to return in Week 8 after recovering from minor surgery Oct. 4. 'The plan is for Andre to practice this week,' Kubiak said. 'That is the plan as of right now, and we'll see how that goes, so (Johnson and FB James Casey) both have an opportunity this week.'

This is great news after last week's comments about Johnson were more vague and less confidence-inspiring in his return coming soon.

WAS - Two put on IR
Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano
The Washington Redskins placed RB Tim Hightower (knee) and TE Chris Cooley (hand) on the Injured Reserve Tuesday, Oct. 25, ending both of their seasons. Cooley had surgery to fix a broken hand.

Without Hightower we may see the Redskins activate rookie RB Evan Royster off their practice squad. The team will move forward with Ryan Torain and Roy Helu as their primary backs.

TB - RB Earnest Graham to IR
Source: KFFL.com
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed RB Earnest Graham (Achilles') on the Injured Reserve Tuesday, Oct. 25, and also waived C Christian Yount.

Graham's Achilles' injury could end his career. The Buccaneers may choose to add a RB from their Practice Squad like Chad Spann.

MIA - QB Matt Moore has bruised ribs
Source: ESPN.com - James Walker
Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (ribs) is dealing with bruised ribs and is being listed as day-to-day.

The team just signed veteran QB J.P. Losman today and he would start at quarterback in Week 8 if Moore is unable to play.

MIN - WR Bernard Berrian released
Source: NFL Network - Jason La Canfora
The Minnesota Vikings have released WR Bernard Berrian.

Berrian was a healthy scratch two of the last three games for the Vikings so this move comes as no surprise. He met with Leslie Frazier to discuss his dwindling role with the team, but apparently the Vikings wanted to go in a different direction.

CLE - Sticking with QB Colt McCoy
Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot
Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said he will continue to stick with QB Colt McCoy as his starting quarterback. Shurmur believes he saw progress from McCoy in the team's Week 7 game. 'I think Colt's improving and I'll stick with what I said (Sunday): I thought he battled,' Shurmur said. 'He scrambled once and got a first down, he got outside the pocket a couple of times and got yards and got out of bounds. He did a lot of good things.'

The Browns are sticking with McCoy now, and likely for the rest of the season. However, if they don't see progress from him over the course of the year they could consider selecting a QB in next year's draft.

SEA - RB Marshawn Lynch's Week 8 status uncertain
Source: Twitter
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said RB Marshawn Lynch (back) wants to play in Week 8 but his status for the game is uncertain at this time.

Lynch owners are now going to feel like they need to sit at the computer right up until the kickoff to make sure Lynch can go. The Bengals aren't a great matchup this week, so it might be best to bench Lynch for one more week even if he is active.

DAL - RB Felix Jones to sit in Week 8
Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
According to a team source, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (ankle) will miss his second straight game in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles due to his high left ankle sprain.

Jones might not be more than the lead back in a committee when he returns.

DAL - RB Tashard Choice to play in Week 8?
Source: The Dallas Morning News - Rainer Sabin
Dallas Cowboys RB Tashard Choice (shoulder) said he should be able to play in the team's Week 8 game. Choice suffered a subuxation, or a partial dislocation, of his right shoulder in Week 7.

Choice was careless with the football against the Rams and lost a fumble. We think we'll see more from Phillip Tanner even if Choice is healthy.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant to be full-time punt returner
Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George
All indications are that Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has taken over punt return duties full-time again. Bryant was back for all five punts in Week 7.

The team is trusting Bryant with a bigger role since his conditioning issues seem to be a thing of the past.

OAK - QB Carson Palmer knows very little of offense
Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran
Oakland Raiders QB Carson Palmer had memorized roughly 10 percent of the team's offensive playbook prior to Week 7. Head coach Hue Jackson is confident Palmer will get more comfortable during the bye week as he practices with the team's corps of wide receivers.

He's familiar with Hue Jackson but doesn't know much of the Al Saunders offense. Palmer will be working hard during the bye week to catch up.  Unless you're in a desperate QB situation, don't play him.

DEN - RB Willis McGahee update
Source: SportingNews.com - Lee Rasizer
Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee (finger) will undergo surgery on the fourth metacarpal of his index finger later this week.

McGahee is unlikely to play over the next two weeks for the Broncos. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball. The Broncos may also choose to sign Jeremiah Johnson from their practice squad.

DEN - Tim Tebow vulnerable
Source: The Denver Post - Jeff Legwold
Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow was sacked seven times in the team's Week 8 win over the Miami Dolphins, and most of the sacks came with the team in three-receiver sets with Tebow in the shotgun. The Dolphins were ranked 29th in the league coming into the game in rushing the passer. Tebow is being sacked once every 4.9 pass attempts in the six quarters he has played this year.

The Dolphins defensive line had zero sacks entering the game on Sunday, and registered 4 on the day. Tebow holds onto the ball too long as he doesn't want to throw an interception, but will need to learn how to throw the ball away.
