Week 3: Midweek Roundup

Lots of injuries this week, but there are some undervalued pick ups on the waiver wire for those that need roster replacements.  Read on...

PHI - No update on QB Michael Vick
Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen
The Philadelphia Eagles will not have an update on the condition of QB Michael Vick (concussion) until Wednesday, Sept. 21. The team is expected to get Vick in for an MRI and concussion testing as soon as possible.

To be safe, it's probably best to plan on not having Vick this week if you own him. At least until we know a little more. Mike Kafka might be a very nice start vs. the Giants defense that looked lost at times vs. Sam Bradford on Monday night.

HOU - RB Arian Foster to be re-evaluated Wednesday
Source: The Associated Press
Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (hamstring) did not work with the team Monday, Sept. 19, and will be re-evaluated Wednesday, Sept. 21. 'He (Foster) is a little sore today,' Kubiak said Monday. 'I think it is a going to be a process with Arian working himself back to full speed and carrying the full load. I think (Sunday) was a step in the process and we'll see where we're at Wednesday.'

That's not that encouraging if you own Foster. He might be a 'leave on the bench until he gives you a reason to start him' guy right now.
DAL - RB Felix Jones likely to play in Week 3
Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer and Ed Werder
Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones (shoulder) is expected to be available in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins. He suffered a dislocated shoulder in Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers, but he was able to continue playing in a harness.

Jones won't have the clear lead role he had in week 1, and he might not get it back all year. He'll still be the most valuable RB in the Dallas backfield.

NE - TE Aaron Hernandez might miss a month or more
Source: CSNNE.com - Tom E. Curran
Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez (knee) might miss at least a month, and perhaps as many as six weeks, due to his sprained medial collateral ligament.

Rob Gronkowski should be considered the #1 overall fantasy TE while Hernandez is out.

STL - WR Danny Amendola unlikely to practice
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Kathleen Nelson
St. Louis Rams WR Danny Amendola (elbow) is unlikely to practice this week, although head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Amendola's swelling had gone down considerably.

Amendola should resume being a solid WR3/flex in PPR leagues as soon as he is ready to play again.

STL - RB Steven Jackson, others day-to-day
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Kathleen Nelson
St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson (quadriceps) remains day-to-day. Also, LB Ben Leber (groin) and RB Cadillac Williams (hamstring) are being listed as day-to-day.

Jackson would face the Ravens in his return. While the matchup is tough on the surface, if the Rams can run their hurry-up offense as well as they did between the 20s in the first quarter vs. the Giants, Jackson should have some red zone opportunities.

IND - QB Peyton Manning feeling better
Source: ESPN.com
Former NFL QB Archie Manning said his son, Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning (neck), is starting to feel better after his latest neck surgery. 'I do not know. I really don't,' Archie Manning, who recently visited Peyton in Indianapolis, said when asked if he thought Peyton would play this season. 'He was sore after surgery, but he's finally feeling a little better after a week. He's in better spirits. We'll see what happens.'

I believe Archie here. This is one of those things where you really can't know. Anything can happen of course but it would seem insane for Manning to try and return this season even if did get healthy towards the end of the year. Stay tuned.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson in four-game rut
Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky
Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson, dating back to last year, has had four regular-season games with 58 yards or fewer. That is the longest streak of his career with yardage totals so low. The Titans gave Johnson his carries against the Baltimore Ravens and forced Baltimore to stop him in Week 2. Prevailing wisdom is that Johnson will simply need more time due to his holdout in training camp. How much time it will take is what remains the big question.

With Matt Hasselbeck playing at a top level, Johnson's slump won't last long. Buy low.

DEN - WR Brandon Lloyd day-to-day
Source: The Associated Press
Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is listing WR Brandon Lloyd (groin) is being listed as day-to-day as Week 3 approaches.

Lloyd should play vs. Tennessee with the extra rest that the game off gave him. He might see a lot of Cortland Finnegan, so temper expectations for his week 3 numbers.

BUF - WR Roscoe Parrish out for the season?
Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski
There is a distinct possibility Buffalo Bills WR Roscoe Parrish's (ankle) ankle injury could force him to miss the rest of the season. Parrish is scheduled to undergo more tests this week to determine the exact severity of the injury.

This is part of the reason that David Nelson is a must-add in PPR leagues, and even arguably ahead of Denarius Moore and Eric Decker.

DAL - QB Tony Romo’s pain key to Week 3 status
Source: ESPNDallas.com - Tim MacMahon
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not know whether QB Tony Romo (rib, lung) will be able to play in Week 3, saying the decision would primarily be based on managing pain. 'I don't know. I really don't,' Jones said during a radio interview Tuesday, Sept. 20. 'I understand the nature of the injury as much as you can without being in medicine. We'll just have to see how it goes. It has everything to do with just his ability to handle the pain, and we know he has a bunch of it. We'll see how that goes. He'll be monitored obviously extremely closely regarding the pneumothorax and we'll see how it goes.'

Romo should play, but it might be best to leave him on your bench if you have a quality backup to plug in.

DEN - RB Willis McGahee No.1 RB right now?
Source: The Denver Post - Mike Klis
Although Denver Broncos head coach John Fox prefers to use a two-running back system, he has also said he tends to ride the hot hand. As a result, RB Willis McGahee could serve as the team's No. 1 running back, even once RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) returns.

McGahee is clearly the more valuable Broncos back to own at this point. Try to deal Knowshon Moreno while he still has name value if you can.

NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks injury update
Source: CBSSports.com
New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks (knee) said following Week 2 his injured knee did not bother him at all during the game and he does not expect the joint to swell up. Nicks suffered a bone bruise on his knee in Week 1.

Nicks didn't get open the way he usually does, so we don't totally believe him, but we still won't bench Nicks any time he is active.

BUF - More on Stevie Johnson
Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson (groin) said Monday, Sept. 19, that he is still dealing with soreness in his groin. 'I can feel it when I walk now,' Johnson said. 'Last week I didn't feel it when I walked, only when I got on the field. But now it's just there. So I guess with the extra treatment this week I'll be ready to go (in Week 3).' He estimated the pain is a seven out of 10.

Johnson will have to play through the injury all year. It might limit his big plays, but he has still arrived as a true #1 NFL receiver, and a strong WR2 in fantasy leagues.

OAK - Denarius Moore earns more playing time
Source: ANG Newspapers - Steve Corkran
Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said Monday, Sept. 19, that WR Denarius Moore earned more playing time with his breakout performance in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. 'Oh, boy, you better believe he has,' Jackson said. 'There's no doubt. You can't deny that one. What the guy's doing, as I said before, he's done it in training camp, he's done it in practice, he's done it in preseason games, and he's dong it in regular season games. He is as advertised.'

Moore is already a WR3/flex play just on upside alone. If he can reproduce anything near his performance vs. Buffalo against Darrelle Revis and the Jets, he might be even better than that.

DAL - WR Miles Austin not expected to play
Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys WR Miles Austin (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins. The most likely return date is Oct. 16 against the New England Patriots after the team's bye week.

All signs point to Austin being out until week 6, coming off of one of the best games of his career.

WAS - Roy Helu's playing time increases dramatically
Source: CSNWashington.com - Ryan O'Halloran
Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu Jr. saw his playing time increase dramatically from Week 1 to Week 2. After playing just two snaps in the regular season opener against the New York Giants, Helu was on the field for 26 of his team's 82 snaps against the Arizona Cardinals. He also was on the field for all seven of his team's snaps on the game-winning drive.

We're still Tim Hightower fans but I love what Helu is showing us. He's a high upside guy that could shine if given the chance.

JAX - Jack Del Rio still hasn't named QB for Week 3
Source: The Florida Times-Union - Gene Frenette
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio remained noncommittal Tuesday, Sept. 20, when pressed for a starting quarterback heading into Week 3. He is uncertain whether QB Luke McCown will make his third straight start, or if rookie QB Blaine Gabbert will be given his first NFL start.

How would you like to for you job to hinge on deciding between Luke McCown and Blaine Gabbert?  David Garrard doesn't look so bad now does he...

NYG - WR Mario Manningham optimistic
Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Jane McManus
New York Giants WR Mario Manningham (concussion) seemed to think he injured his neck in Week 2, but instead was diagnosed with a concussion after hitting his head on the turf. However, Manningham thinks he'll be alright for Week 3. He will be evaluated throughout the week.

One of the first steps in feeling better is knowing what is actually wrong with you. Many had high hopes for Manningham this year, but so far he is just good to stash on your bench in hopes that he 'gets it' soon and returns to early 2010 form.

HOU - RB Derrick Ward unlikely for Week 3
Source: Houston Chronicle - John McClain
Houston Texans RB Derrick Ward (ankle) is dealing with a sprained ankle, and he is unlikely to play in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints.

Ward has already lost his spot on the depth chart to Ben Tate, and at this rate Steve Slaton could pass him.

BAL - WR Lee Evans might miss time to heal
Source: Carroll County Times - Aaron Wilson
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Monday, Sept. 19, that WR Lee Evans (ankle) has been playing wit ha nagging left ankle injury which might require rest. 'There's no doubt about it,' Harbaugh said. 'It's affecting him, and we're going to have to take a hard look at that. If he can do the things we need him to do, he plays. If he can't, he won't play.'

Evans game is predicted on speed, so anything that slows him down kills his effectiveness.

OAK - WR Jacoby Ford, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey uncertain for Week 3
Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vittorio Tafur
Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson was uncertain Monday, Sept. 19, whether or not WRs Jacoby Ford (hamstring) or Darrius Heyward-Bey (knee) will be healthy enough to play in Week 3. 'I'm not sure,' Jackson said. 'We'll see as we go (through practice this week).'

Hamstrings are very tricky for speed players like Ford. DHB suffered his injury in practice, so we don't really know the extent of the injury. Either way, we know Denarius Moore will be playing and given a chance to continue to take over the Raiders passing game.
