Week 13: Midweek Roundup

Sorry folks for the lack of posting last week, but a lot of turkey got in the way.  We're starting to get real serious over here at Mrs. Wager as the FF season is winding down.  It's the last week of regular season for many of you...which means gotta start thinking ahead to the playoffs.  By now, there's probably slim pickings on the Waiver wire due to injuries especially at QB and RB.  So let's see where we stand...

IND - QB Dan Orlovsky to start
Source: Colts.com - Craig Kelley
Indianapolis Colts QB Dan Orlovsky will start over QB Curtis Painter in Week 13 versus the New England Patriots, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Orlovsky has gone 14-for-21 with 122 yards this season.

The Patriots secondary is not good, so Orlovsky has a chance to put up some decent stats. We're not recommending Orlovsky as a fantasy addition, but he may be able to breathe life into this passing game.

JAX - Jack Del Rio fired
Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has been fired, according to team sources. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is the leading candidate to take over the team on an interim basis.

Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker will take over as interim head coach. It wouldn't be surprising to see the team rally behind Tucker a bit. But as far as fantasy football goes, I wouldn't expect much change from what we've been seeing.

PHI - WR Jeremy Maclin likely to sit out
Source: The Associated Press
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin (hamstring, shoulder) is likely to miss his third straight game in Week 13 as the team faces off against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Dec. 1.

Without Maclin in the lineup we'll see more from Riley Cooper and perhaps even Jason Avant.

HOU - QB Jake Delhomme to serve as backup
Source: The Associated Press
Houston Texans QB Jake Delhomme will serve as the backup to QB T.J. Yates. Delhomme's agent said he has been working out and staying in shape.

Delhomme is a savvy veteran, but he hasn't looked good under center in a few years. The Texans will move forward with Yates as their starter unless he completely falls apart.

SEA - WR Sidney Rice unlikely to play
Source: The Seattle Times - Danny O'Neil
Seattle Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (concussion) is not practicing Tuesday, Nov. 29, and is highly unlikely to play in Week 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Dec. 1. 'Very slim that he has any chance of playing,' head coach Pete Carroll said. Rice has suffered two concussions in the last three games. He will be replaced in the lineup by WR Ben Obomanu, and WR Golden Tate will see more action.

Without Rice in the lineup it makes Doug Baldwin an even more interesting fantasy option.

DET - RB Kevin Smith not practicing
Source: MLive.com - Philip Zaroo
Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (ankle), along with S Louis Delmas (knee), CB Chris Houston (knee) and DL Lawrence Jackson (thigh) were not practicing Tuesday, Nov. 29. Smith had his ankle wrapped but was not using crutches to get around.

Sorry to those who picked up Smith on the WW in the last few weeks, if Smith is unable to go then we'll see Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams in the lineup.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson to start
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said WR DeSean Jackson will start against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13 Thursday, Dec. 1. Jackson was benched in the fourth quarter in Week 12.

Jackson has not been the same player since getting hit by Falcons CB Dunta Robinson last year. We'll see if he can finally start to play up to his potential after being suspended earlier and benched last week.  Solid WR2 with upside especially since Maclin will be out.

PHI - QB Michael Vick misses practice
Source: CBSSports.com
Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (ribs) will not practice Tuesday, Nov. 29, which makes it unlikely he will play in Week 13.

Playing through a rib injury is all about pain tolerance. We'll see Vince Young under center again if Vick can't play.

DAL - WR Miles Austin expected to play in Week 13
Source: ESPNDallas.com - Tim MacMahon
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he anticipates WR Miles Austin (hamstring) will play in the team's Week 13 game. However, Jones added Austin will be monitored throughout the week. 'I do, yes,' Jones said during a radio appearance Tuesday, Nov. 29. 'But I don't know. I saw him yesterday and he was moving around real well. (Austin) said he could go Sunday, but we'll see how this week goes along. We don't want to push that, because we've got a lot of football ahead of us. By the same token, we could use him. We've missed him.'

Getting Austin back on the field will negatively impact the fantasy value of Laurent Robinson.  Those who had the patience to hang on to Austin may get rewarded this week

KC - QB Kyle Orton will get chance to be starter
Source: ESPN.com
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said Monday, Nov. 28, that QB Tyler Palko remains the starting quarterback, but he acknowledged that QB Kyle Orton will be given every opportunity to win the job before Week 13. 'Tyler's the starter,' Haley said, 'but as we do every week and with every position, if we feel Kyle or Ricky (Stanzi) gives us a chance to win, we'll make that determination.'

It's quite ironic that Orton could be starting against the Bears this Sunday.  Decent option if you're desperate at the QB position.

PHI - RB LeSean McCoy limited
Source: KFFL.com
Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (toe) was limited in practice Tuesday, Nov. 29.

McCoy is likely to be limited all week in practice, but should be good to go for the game this weekend.

TB - QB Josh Freeman needed stitches
Source: The Tampa Tribune - Ira Kaufman
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman (thumb) initially injured his right thumb during an accident at a firing range Oct. 31, in which he required five stitches. The team was previously saying he suffered a sprained thumb Oct. 23. The stitches were taken out a week later. Tampa Bay said Freeman did not violate his contract by firing a weapon. He hasn't worn a protective wrap on his thumb in the last two games.

Freeman should stick to Call of Duty if he wants to fire a weapon, or at least wait until the offseason.

IND - Would likely select Andrew Luck
Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
The Indianapolis Colts will likely select Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft should the team land the No. 1 overall pick.

Andrew Luck is seen as a 'can't miss' prospect and should be the top pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He doesn't have a 'plus arm' but he has a nearly perfect skill set. He's athletic enough to avoid the rush, has the toughness to stand strong in the pocket and take a hit, plus he has high football intelligence.

SEA - Injury hindering QB Tarvaris Jackson
Source: The Seattle Times - Danny O'Neil
Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral) may require surgery after the season to fix his injured pectoral muscle. The injury appears to be significantly hurting Jackson's ability to heave the ball downfield; he has completely only two passes that have gone for more than 20 yards in the last two weeks.

Jackson is showing great toughness playing through this. Don't expect many deep passes with the limitations in his throwing motion because of this pectoral injury.

JAX - Is Blaine Gabbert long-term answer?
Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Gregg Rosenthal
Prospective candidates for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching vacancy will likely ask if QB Blaine Gabbert must remain the franchise quarterback of the future. General manager Gene Smith drafted Gabbert, but Smith rejected a contract extension last offseason. Smith’s future in Jacksonville is tenuous. Gabbert's play this season also raises questions as to whether he will be a quality starter.

Gabbert has looked like the worst starting QB in the league. His mechanics are poor and he constantly throws off his back foot. Just like in college Gabbert feels pressure when it's not there and he'll rush his throws because of it.

PIT - No symptoms for S Troy Polamalu
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette
Updating a previous item, Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (concussion) is not experiencing concussion-like symptoms after being knocked out in Week 12, and head coach Mike Tomlin is 'confident at this juncture' that Polamalu will start in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Good news for the Steelers here. The team will continue to monitor Polamalu and will give him more concussion tests later this week.

WAS - Coach says Roy Helu starter
Source: Twitter
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said RB Roy Helu Jr. is definitely the team’s starting running back.

Oh how things change quickly with Mike Shanahan. Last week he said Helu was not ready to be the starter and then one 100-yard game later Helu is named the starter. With Shanahan fantasy owners must enjoy the ride while it lasts because it could be a short one.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson’s Week 13 status uncertain
Source: Twitter
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said RB Adrian Peterson has made progress from his ankle injury but his status for Week 13 is uncertain at this time.

The Vikings are facing Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos in week 13. They need Peterson back on the field if they want to improve their chances of winning.

ARI - Optimistic about QB Kevin Kolb’s Week 13 status
Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he is optimistic QB Kevin Kolb (toe) will be able to play in Week 13.

John Skelton has not been playing well in recent weeks. The team has been cautious with Kolb coming back from this toe injury and will turn to him as their starter when he's ready.

OAK - RB Darren McFadden out of walking boot
Source: The Oakland Tribune - Steve Corkran
Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden (foot) is out of his walking boot and has made progress in his recovery from the foot injury.

This is a good sign for McFadden. The Raiders are at the top of their division and want to keep distance between themselves and the Broncos. Getting McFadden back would help do that. He could return to the field in the next couple of weeks.

CLE - RB Peyton Hillis expects big finish to season
Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer
Cleveland Browns RB Peyton Hillis (hamstring) said following Week 12 that he is feeling better and expects to have a strong finish to the season. Hillis rushed for 65 yards on 19 carries in the game. 'It's tough when you don't know how things are going to go until you get in the rhythm of things,' Hillis said. 'Things started going well toward the middle of the game and toward the end. I expect big things. I expect to progress and I'm looking forward to next week.' Hillis said his recovery from the hamstring injury was aided by a plasma-rich platelet injection, a type of therapy that is thought to aid in muscle repair.

Hillis looked like his old self against the Bengals on Sunday. He was running hard, initiating contact, and kept his legs churning after contact. Fantasy owners have been patiently waiting for him to come back this year but the upcoming schedule isn't kind. The Browns face both the Ravens and Steelers twice in the next five weeks.

ARI - Beanie Wells should be fine for Week 13
Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said RB Beanie Wells’ (knee) knee was a little swollen and sore after the Week 12 game but should be fine for Week 13.

Wells came in banged up and had a monster day against the Rams. Fantasy owners that missed out may rush to put him into the lineup against the Cowboys in week 13. We see him as a RB2 with upside this week as Dallas is tougher against the run than the Rams.

SD - QB Philip Rivers denies playing injured
Source: CBSSports.com
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and head coach Norv Turner both continue to deny that Rivers is playing with an injury. In Week 12, Rivers again didn't show his customary zip on several passes. He pushed several passes.

Rivers can deny it all he wants, he still looks hurt. His upper body seems especially rigid when he's throwing the ball. Rivers has been under constant assault this year because the offensive line is not protecting him well.

TEN - RB Chris Johnson posts 27th 100-yard game
Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt
Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson posted his 27th career 100-yard rushing game in Week 12, and he had his sixth game with at least 150 yards. The 190 rushing yards was the third-best of Johnson's career.

Johnson finally looked like his old self on Sunday. He was running hot and kept his legs churning after contact. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come with Johnson for the rest of the season.

HOU - WR Andre Johnson makes it through Week 12 game
Source: HoustonTexans.com - Nick Scurfield
Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday, Nov. 28, that WR Andre Johnson (hamstring) made it through the Week 12 game without any setbacks. 'Andre came out fine. He played too much,' Kubiak said. 'Dang it, I had him in there too many plays. He got tired on me. He took a step forward. It's going to take a few weeks for him to get back to himself, but for the progress he's made to play yesterday and caome out of the game okay, I feel good about that.'

The question is whether Johnson will have someone that can get him back to WR1 status at QB. RIght now that is very unsure.

CIN - Coach heaps praise on A.J. Green
Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Daugherty
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis was gushing about WR A.J. Green Monday, Nov. 28, after his solid performance in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns. 'He's the best first-round draft pick I've ever been around,' Lewis proclaimed. 'He continues to amaze me, every day.'

We may go a long time before we see another rookie QB to WR combo like Dalton-to-Green.

CLE - Greg Little drops several balls in Week 12
Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich
Cleveland Browns WR Greg Little dropped several balls in Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and left after the game without speaking to reporters. Head coach Pat Shurmur said it is a sign that Little was bothered, and cares. 'He dropped too many balls,' Shurmur said. 'I don't expect that to be a trend.'

Little has major concentration issues in an offense that has little margin of error. He has the rest of the season to prove the Browns coaches that he can be a reliable starting WR. They should probably still go back to the well in the draft for a WR, but Little's performance may determine how early they take a receiver.

TEN - TE Jared Cook passes all tests
Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt
Tennessee Titans TE Jared Cook (concussion) has passed all of his concussion tests and is expected to play in Week 13.

Cook could be a good fantasy play this weekend as the Titans face the Bills. Buffalo has been giving it up to opponent's TEs all season long.

STL - WR Danario Alexander expected to practice
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Kathleen Nelson
St. Louis Rams WR Danario Alexander (hamstring) is expected to practice this week and head coach Steve Spagnuolo hopes he will be able to play Week 13.

The Rams could use Alexander back on the field to help draw some coverage away from Brandon Lloyd.

DET - DT Ndamukong Suh expected to be suspended
Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter
Detroit Lions DL Ndamukong Suh is expected to be fined at least two games by the NFL after his unsportsmanlike act against the Green Bay Packers in Week 12.

It was an aggressive act, and certainly unsportsmanlike. We'd like if Suh just confessed and admitted it was a poor decision made in the heat of the moment rather than say he was just trying to catch his balance.
